ELSS vs PPF vs NPS: Which 80C Option is Right for You?

October 28, 2024 · 8 min read

Every March, millions of Indians scramble to complete their Section 80C investments. But not all 80C options are created equal. The choice between ELSS, PPF, and NPS can significantly impact your long-term wealth.

ELSS (Equity Linked Savings Scheme)

ELSS funds are diversified equity mutual funds with a statutory 3-year lock-in. They offer the highest return potential (12–15% historically) and the shortest lock-in among 80C options. Returns above ₹1 lakh are taxed at 10% as LTCG.

PPF (Public Provident Fund)

PPF is a government-backed debt instrument with a 15-year lock-in and current interest rate of 7.1%. Returns are fully tax-free under EEE status. Ideal for ultra-conservative investors and debt allocation.

NPS (National Pension System)

NPS offers an additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B) beyond the 80C limit. However, 40% of the corpus must be used to buy an annuity at retirement, and the annuity income is taxable.

ELSS wins on return potential and flexibility. PPF wins on safety. NPS wins for additional tax benefits beyond 80C.

Our Recommendation

For most working professionals under 50, a combination works best: Use ELSS for equity exposure and higher returns within 80C. Consider PPF for safe, tax-free debt returns. Add NPS if your tax liability is high and you're planning for retirement systematically.
